What Happens to Your NPS Account When You Change Jobs?

New job. New designation. Same retirement account.

Changing jobs can mean a new organisation, a new role and perhaps even a new city.

But does it mean starting your retirement savings from scratch?

Not necessarily.

One of the important features of NPS is its portability. PFRDA states that an NPS account is portable across employment types and geographical locations, allowing continuity in retirement savings.

Your PRAN stays with you

Every NPS subscriber is allotted a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN).

Think of it as the unique identity of your NPS account.

PFRDA's Corporate Model FAQ specifically states that the PRAN can be transferred across employment, employers, locations and geographies.

So, when you change jobs, your NPS account doesn't automatically disappear with your previous employer.

What happens when you join a new company?

Let's say you have been contributing to NPS through your current employer.

You then move to another organisation.

If the new employer has adopted NPS, you can provide your existing PRAN to the new employer so that the existing account can be tagged to the new employment.

PFRDA specifically states that an employee who already has an NPS account can provide their PRAN to the new employer. The employee can also transfer the pension account to a new employer where NPS is implemented.

That means your career can move forward without necessarily resetting your retirement savings journey.

What if the new employer doesn't offer NPS?

A career change doesn't automatically have to end your NPS journey.

PFRDA states that if NPS is not implemented in the new organisation, the subscriber may continue the account under the All Citizen Model through a registered Point of Presence (PoP), subject to the applicable process and rules.

This portability is particularly relevant today, when professionals may move between companies, industries and employment structures throughout their careers.

Can you change your investment approach too?

A job change can also be a useful point to review your broader retirement strategy.

NPS offers investment choices, allowing subscribers to determine how their contributions are invested according to the applicable framework.

PFRDA's current framework provides flexibility around investment choices and states that subscribers can change their asset allocation/investment choice up to four times a year.

So while your PRAN can travel with your career, your investment strategy can also be reviewed as your financial circumstances evolve.

What if you move from retail NPS to corporate NPS?

If you are already an NPS subscriber under the Retail/All Citizen Model and later join an organisation that offers NPS under the Corporate Model, you can continue with your existing NPS account by providing your PRAN to the new employer, subject to the applicable PFRDA rules and process. This means you do not necessarily have to open a new NPS account when your employment changes. Your PRAN remains with you, allowing your retirement savings journey to continue even when you move from an individual NPS arrangement to an employer-sponsored Corporate NPS arrangement.

Why does portability matter?

Retirement planning is a long-term journey.

Your career may change several times before you retire. Portability helps ensure that your retirement savings can continue alongside those changes.

PFRDA explicitly identifies portability across employment types and geographic locations across India as one of the features of NPS.

So the next time you prepare for a job switch, remember the usual checklist:

New role?

New company?

New responsibilities?

Existing PRAN? Don't forget it.

Your career can take a new direction.

Your retirement plan can continue moving forward.

New job. New designation. New city. Same PRAN.

Changing jobs can mean a lot of things a new organisation, a new role, a new team and sometimes even a new city.

But does changing your job mean starting your retirement savings journey all over again?

Not necessarily.

One of the important features of the National Pension System (NPS) is portability. PFRDA states that an NPS account is portable across employment types and geographical locations, helping subscribers maintain continuity in their retirement savings.

Portability, contribution, investment, withdrawal and exit provisions are subject to prevailing PFRDA regulations.
